About the Course

Develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to professionally prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective group exercise programmes within a gym, health club or outdoor environment within the context of Exercise to Music (Freestyle) or Circuit Training. Completing these qualifications allows learners to access jobs instructing group exercise classes/sessions for their chosen discipline.


The YMCA Awards Level 2 Group Exercise Instructor (Exercise to Music or Circuit Training) qualification awards 10 CIMSPA points.

To make your qualification more affordable, we offer a payment plan where you pay a non-refundable £125 deposit and choose to repay the balance, interest-free over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.



What will I learn on the Level 3 Gym Instructing & Personal Training Diploma?

What topics are covered on this course?
  • Anatomy & physiology to include the circulatory system, respiratory system, anatomical terminology, the skeletal system, joints, the muscular system, digestive system, energy systems, implications for special populations and the nervous system.


  • Providing a positive customer experience to include customer needs and expectations, customer service, maintaining an exercise environment, professionalism, operative and legislative procedures, controlling risks, safeguarding and supporting a health and fitness business.


  • Lifestyle and health awareness management to include promoting a healthy lifestyle, the importance of healthy eating, and supporting clients to adhere to exercise.


GROUP CIRCUIT TRAINING

  • Principles of planning and delivering group circuit training to include scope of practice, screening, different formats of circuit training to develop CV fitness, muscular fitness, flexibility, functional ability and motor skills, use of a range of equipment, behaviour management, and accommodating different ability level.


EXERCISE TO MUSIC (FREESTYLE)

  • Principles of planning and delivering group exercise to include scope of practice, screening, methods of progression/regression, use of music and equipment, ranges of exercises and methods of training for CV fitness, resistance training, functional exercise, flexibility and motor skils.


  • Planning and delivering group exercise to include a freestyle format in a variety of styles and choreography methods including 32-count phrasing, add-on, layering and verse/chorus.


What you will be able to do by the end of the course?
  • Show understanding of anatomy & physiology and how it relates to exercise and fitness;

  • Present yourself in a professional manner, provide excellent customer service and demonstrate effective communication skills.

  • Provide a positive customer experience to ensure exercise equipment meets health and safety requirements;

  • Promote a healthy and active lifestyle which includes the important of healthy eating and offering behaviour change strategies to support clients to adopt behaviours that will help prevent a range of health conditions;

  • Plan and safely deliver effective group exercise sessions in the context of circuit training OR exercise to music (freestyle) for a range of participants with your scope of practice. This including demonstrating effective communication to engage and fully support participants.


What are the course units and how are each assessed?
  • Unit 1 - Anatomy & physiology for exercise and fitness instructors - assessed via a multiple choice theory exam and online workbook;

  • Unit 2 - Providing a positive customer experience in the exercise environment - assessed via a online workbook and observation (video submission);

  • Unit 3 - Lifestyle and health awareness management - assessed via an online workbook;

  • Unit 4 - Principles of planning and delivering group exercise - assessed via a worksheet;


  • Unit 5 - Plan and deliver group circuit training OR Plan and deliver group exercise to music (freestyle) - assessed via a worksheet, session planning and observation of practical teaching (via video submission).

Please note: for the group exercise to music unit, you will be required to purchase a specific music playlist for use during the course (this costs around £25).


What is the entry requirements for this course?

There are no entry requirements for this course apart from a keen interest in fitness and experience attending group classes and confidence working online and with programmes such as Microsoft word and excel. A good level of communication and competence working online is essential.


Study and Assessment Options
The Circuit Training pathway of this qualification is offered as an ONLINE/DISTANCE LEARNING course. 
The Exercise to Music (Freestyle) pathway of this qualification is offered as both an ONLINE/DISTANCE LEARNING course or you can choose to attend out TUTOR-TAUGHT workshop dates. 
You can start studying straight away.

All students have up to 12 months to complete and pass all assessments in order to achieve the qualification. All assessments can be completed and submitted remotely, including online exams and video submission for practical observations.
