Exercise to Music (Freestyle)

The YMCA Awards Level 2 in Teaching Group Exercise to Music (Freestyle) qualification is the entry level qualification for anyone wishing to pursue a career in teaching studio-based group exercise classes whether that's in a community venue or health and fitness club setting. This qualification also awards 10 CIMSPA points and 20 REPs points.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?


Show understanding of anatomy & physiology and how it relates to exercise and fitness; Present yourself in a professional manner, provide excellent customer service and demonstrate effective communication skills. Provide a positive customer experience to ensure exercise equipment meets health and safety requirements; Promote a healthy and active lifestyle which includes the important of healthy eating and offering behaviour change strategies to support clients to adopt behaviours that will help prevent a range of health conditions; Plan and professionally deliver group exercise sessions in a variety of styles, using a variety of choerographic and teaching methods for a range of participants within their scope of practice. This includes demonstrating effective communication ro engage and fully support participants; Select relevant exercises and design appropriate exercise/routines which address safety at all times, use logical and progressive teaching methodology to develop choreography and build routines effectively.




What is the entry requirement for this course?


Experience in attending group exercise classes is essential.




What are the course units and how are each assessed?


Unit 1 - Anatomy & physiology for exercise and fitness instructors - assessed via a multiple choice theory exam and digital assessment workbook; Unit 2 - Providing a positive customer experience in the exercise environment - assessed via a digital assessment workbook and observation; Unit 3 - Lifestyle and health awareness management - assessed via a digital assessment workbook; Unit 4 - Principles of planning and deliverinyg group exercise - assessed via knowledge questions, an exercise to music (freestyle) class plan and observation. Unit 5 - Plan and deliver group exercise to music (freestyle) - assessed via knowledge questions, an exercise to music (freestyle) class plan and observation. Please note: you will be required to purchase a specific music playlist for use during the course (this costs around £25).




What topics are covered on this course?


Anatomy & physiology to include the circulatory system, respiratory system, anatomical terminology, the skeletal system, joints, the muscular system, digestive system, energy systems, implications for special populations and the nervous system. Providing a positive customer experience to include customer needs and expectations, customer service, maintaining an exercise environment, professionalism, operative and legislative procedures, controlling risks, safeguarding and supporting a health and fitness business. Lifestyle and health awareness management to include promoting a healthy lifestyle, the importance of healthy eating, and supporting clients to adhere to exercise. Principles of planning and delivering group exercise to include scope of practice, screening, methods of progression/regression, use of music and equipment, ranges of exercises and methods of training for CV fitness, resistance training, functional exercise, flexibility and motor skils. Planning and delivering group exercise to include a freestyle format in a variety of styles and choreopgraphy methods including 32-count phrasing, add-on, layering and verse/chorus.





 
Study & Assessment Options

The Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Group Exercise to Music (Freestyle) is a LIVE course, which involves both distance learning and attendance to course dates.

This LIVE course includes some distance learning plus course attendance dates for practical elements. All assessments can be completed on the course dates, but theory exams can be deferred to a later date if you wish or even completed prior the the course dates should you enrol early enough. 

A tutor support full distance learning study option is available if you are already teaching group exercise e.g. Beatz Fitness, Zumba etc.
