About the Course

This YMCA Awards Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification is mapped to the CIMSPA professional standards. It is the entry level qualification for anyone wishing to obtain employment as a gym-based fitness instructor.


This course is necessary in order to progress onto the Level 3 Personal Training (Practitioner) qualification or you can access the Level 3 Gym Instructing and Personal Training (Practitioner) Diploma with no pre-requisite qualification. This qualification also awards 10 CIMSPA points.



Payment Plan

To make your qualification more affordable, we offer a payment plan where you pay a non-refundable £125 deposit and choose to repay the balance, interest-free over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.


Study and Assessment Options
This qualification is offered as a FACE-TO-FACE or ONLINE course, which you can start studying straight away.

This ONLINE course includes online elearning for all units plus video submission for assessments. It is possible to sit your theory exams online should you not be able to attend one of our assessment centre in Telford, Shropshire.


The course dates for our next FACE-TO-FACE course are;

4th - 8th March in Worcester
11th - 15th March in Newcastle Under Lyme
8th - 12th April in Telford
3rd - 7th June in Telford
2nd - 6th September in Newcastle Under Lyme

Please specify which dates you wish to attend upon booking (unless you are opting for the online course).

All students have up to 12 months to complete and pass all assessments in order to achieve the qualification.



What will I learn on the Level 3 Gym Instructing & Personal Training Diploma?

What topics are covered on this course?
  • Anatomy & physiology to include the circulatory system, respiratory system, anatomical terminology, the skeletal system, joints, the muscular system, digestive system, energy systems, implications for special populations and the nervous system.

  • Providing a positive customer experience to include customer needs and expectations, customer service, maintaining an exercise environment, professionalism, operative and legislative procedures, controlling risks, safeguarding and supporting a health and fitness business.

  • Lifestyle and health awareness management to include promoting a healthy lifestyle, the importance of healthy eating, and supporting clients to adhere to exercise.

  • Gym-based programme planning and preparation to include adapting communication techniques when dealing with different client needs, conducting health assessments, setting goals with client information, planning a gym-based session including cardiovascular methods, resistance training, functional exercise, flexibility and motor skills.

  • Gym-based delivery and instruction to include introducing individuals and groups to the gym environment, instructing gym-based sessions, and supervising clients in the gym.


What you will be able to do by the end of the course?
  • Show understanding of anatomy & physiology and how it relates to exercise and fitness;

  • Present yourself in a professional manner, provide excellent customer service and demonstrate effective communication skills.

  • Provide a positive customer experience to ensure exercise equipment meets health and safety requirements;

  • Promote a healthy and active lifestyle which includes the important of healthy eating and offering behaviour change strategies to support clients to adopt behaviours that will help prevent a range of health conditions;

  • Plan and prepare gym-based exercise programmes for a range of clients within the scope of practice, which includes demonstrating effective communication to engage and fully support clients;

  • Professionally and safely deliver an effective gym-based exercise session to a range of clients within scope of practice.


What are the course units and how are each assessed?
  • Unit 1 - Anatomy & physiology for exercise and fitness instructors - assessed via a multiple choice theory exam and online workbook;

  • Unit 2 - Providing a positive customer experience in the exercise environment - assessed via a online workbook and observation (video submission);

  • Unit 3 - Lifestyle and health awareness management - assessed via an online workbook;

  • Unit 4 - Gym-based programme delivery and preparation - assessed via a gym programme card, observation of gym-based exercises (in person on face-to-face course or video submission on online course), case study and written worksheet questions;

  • Unit 5 - Gym-based programme delivery and professional instruction - assessed via two observations of a client consultation and a gym-based exercise session (in person on face-to-face course or video submission on online course)


What is the entry requirements for this course?

There are no entry requirements for this course apart from a keen interest in fitness and experience using a gym including free weights and confidence working online and with programmes such as Microsoft word and excel. A good level of communication and competence working online is essential.
