About the Course
YMCA Level 2 Award in Engaging Inactive People in Physical Activity to Create Long-Term Behaviour Change
This qualification is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of qualified fitness instructors for them to be able to work with inactive people (adults) with no pre-existing health conditions. Upon completion, you will be able to plan and deliver programmes of physical activity that can engage individuals and positively challenge behaviours for the long term.

Identifying target groups likely to be inactive
Combatting barriers to inactivity and non-participation in physical activity through application of behaviour change strategies

Awareness of initiatives aimed at increasing physical activity levels
How to plan inclusive physical activity sessions for inactive people within communities
How to collate and feedback to inform future programme
How to prepare, plan and deliver inclusive, safe and fun physical activity sessions for inactive people
Identify individual client requirements for differentiation and adapt exercises accordingly
Promote retention and behaviour change via appropriate communication skills and feedback to participants.
Entry Requirements
In order to achieve this qualification, you will be required to lead exercise sessions designed for inactive people. Therefore, you must have successfully completed an indsutry recognised Level 2 fitness instructor qualification as a prerequisite.
Payment Plan
To make your qualification more affordable, we offer a payment plan where you pay a non-refundable £125 deposit and choose to repay the balance, interest-free over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.
Qualification Structure
To achieve the Level 2 Award in Engaging Inactive People in Physical Activity to Create Long-Term Behaviour Change you must complete two mandatory units.
Unit 1 - Working with Inactive People - assessed via completion of a worksheet, session planning and session observation.
Unit 2 - Lifestyle Management and Health Awareness - assessed via completion of an online assessment quiz.

Barriers and enablers for participation in physical activity including ways to overcome barriers
The benefits and measures of participation in regular physical activity including sociological, physiological and psychological benefits
The benefits to society of engaging people in physical activity
The importance of building relationships and connecting with inactive people including how to adapt communication methods to meet the needs of participants from differing backgrounds
The range of local, regional and national initiatives for inactive people
Activities that could be used when planning physical activity sessions for inactive people including how they can be adapted to appeal to an inactive person or group
How to plan inclusive, safe and fun physical activity programmes for inactive people including the importance of having contingency plans in place
How to motivate and influence behaviour change
Offering feedback to promote retention and change in behaviour including giving participants the opportunity to reflect on the session, ask questions, provide feedback and identify further needs
Define the components of fitness including health and skills related components
The benefits of a healthy and active lifestlye
How physical activity and exercise can help prevent common health conditions and chronic conditions such as:
Coronary heart disease
Stroke
Some cancers
Type 2 diabetes
Hypertension
Obesity
Musculoskeletal conditions
Mental health conditions
When a referral to another professional is necessary
Importance of healthy eating including the national food model/guide, key healthy eating advice, importance of hydration, professional boundaries, the energy balance equation and the health risks of poor nutrition
How to support clients to adhere to exercise and physical activity including identifying typical barriers to exercise, behaviour change approaches/strategies, and setting short, medium and long term SMART goals.
