Course Information

The Level 4 Certificate in Weight Management for Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome contains 3 mandatory units.

 

Entry Requirement: A recognised Level 3 Exercise Referral qualification 

UNITS

  • Considerations for safe and effective weight management programmes for individuals with obesity, diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome - assessed via a worksheet and written long and short answer theory exam

  • Programming group weight management for individuals with obesity, diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome - assessed via a worksheet, filmed client consultation, weight management programme, physical activity plan and programme overview, 

  • Delivering group weight management sessions for individuals with obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome - assessed via a worksheet, filmed weight management session and self-evaluation.

The aim of the qualification is to:

  • Equip you with a sound understanding of the conditions of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, their links with society, associated disease risk, disease states and the available treatments,

  • Understand the impact of physical activity for individuals with these conditions, how to manage associated risks, the important of building relationships with key individuals and how to help individuals with these conditions to manage their weight,

  • Equip you you with the knowledge and skills to collect client information and agree goals to design weight management programmes for individuals with obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome and encourage long-term behaviour change.

  • Equip you with the knowledge and skills to deliver motivational weight management sessions for groups of individuals with obesity, diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome - sessions will include 1-2-1 weight-in, topical group discussions and physical activity.

Overview of knowledge and understanding:

  • Definition of obesity and diabetes, and components of metabolic syndrome,

  • The causes of obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome and prevalence in the UK and worldwide,

  • The effects of society and impact of the media on the health of the nation,

  • Links between early years and obesity including childhood obesity, breastfeeding, nutrition and exercise knowledge and foetal nutrition,

  • Energy balance equation and the components of energy expenditure,

  • The impact of different food types and obesogenic environments, sleep deprivation and stress on weight management and obesity,

  • Using national sources of information and working with other professionals and linking with specialists and community health care teams,

  • Links with other clinical conditions,

  • The physiological effects of insulin and other evaluated and accepted treatments and drugs for obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome,

  • Benefits of physical activity and exercise for adults with obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and the implications of inactivity,

  • The potential risks adverse effects, contraindications of exercise for this population,

Overview of skills:

  • Be able to assess body composition and evaluate methods of assessment including body stat measurements, skin fold callipers, waist to hip ratio and BMI,

  • Collecting screening information from clients with obesity, diabetes and/or metabolic syndrome and developing a professional and motivational relationship,

  • Long-term behaviour change in developing health and wellbeing, fitness and prevention of medical conditions,

  • Using different methods, techniques and systems to encourage clients to commit to behaviour change,

  • Strategies to motivate clients to adhere to a weight management programme,

  • Designing a weight management programme including 1-2-1 weigh-in and discussion, group topical discussions, physical activity sessions, including alternatives and modifications,

  • Designing physical activity that is appropriate to the clients needs, abilities and goals,

  • Delivering weight management sessions including risk assessment, pre-screening, effective communication, health and safety, adapting and providing the opportunity for questions and feedback,.

Study & Assessment Options

This qualification is offered as a DISTANCE LEARNING course. 

The DISTANCE LEARNING course includes the YMCA Awards Level 4 manual to study from, and full assessment guidance. This is a Level 4 qualification, so it will involve your own extra reading and research as well as drawing on your previous Level 2 and 3 knowledge and skills. You will have the support or a tutor should you require any additional guidance throughout the course. It does require completion of a theory paper, which must be sat at our centre in Telford and also video evidence for the client consultation and weight management programme.

All students have up to 12 months to complete and pass all assessments in order to achieve the qualification.
