Here is a more detailed insight into what the course involves, including the content of each unit and how you will be assessed on each unit.


This qualification is accredited by YMCA Awards and is set at Level 3. We run the qualification as a blended-learning course, so it involves both distance learning and attendance to 8 compulsory course dates which include assessments.

COURSE TUTOR

Our course tutor, Carl has worked as a Sports Therapist for 4 years with experience in pitch-side support for Wolves Women FC, Telford Tigers Ice Hockey team and at St Georges' Park National Football Centre. He holds an MSc in Sports & Exercise Therapy, and a wealth of fitness qualifications, which he has achieved over the past 14 years working in the fitness industry. We are thrilled to welcome Carl to the Fit4Training team and he is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with you on this course.



COURSE CONTENT

UNIT 1: ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY OF SPORTS MASSAGE

  • Structural organisation of the human body;

  • skeleton

  • skin

  • joints

  • muscular system

  • nervous system

  • endocrine system

  • cardiovascular system

  • respiratory system

  • lymphatic system

  • digestive system

  • urinary system

  • Effects of sports massage on body systems.

Assessments:

  • Assessment workbook

  • Multiple-choice theory examination



UNIT 2: PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH AND FITNESS

  • Benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle;

  • Short and long term effects of exercise on the body;

  • Importance of healthy eating;

  • Components of fitness;

  • Principles of training.

Assessments:

  • Worksheet questions

  • Short answer theory assessment



UNIT 3: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE IN SPORTS MASSAGE

  • Legislation required in sports massage;

  • Scope of practice in sports massage - cautions and contraindications, referral procedures;

  • Relevant professional standards in sports massage profession;

  • Principles of professional practice in sports massage;

  • Producing, maintaining and storing client records.

Assessments:

  • Short answer theory assessment



UNIT 4: UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES OF SOFT TISSUE DYSFUNCTION

  • Soft tissue dysfunction - types, causes, severity, signs and symptoms;

  • Process of repair of soft tissue.

UNIT 5: SPORTS MASSAGE TREATMENTS

  • History and development of massage;

  • Fundamentals of sports massage treatments - pre/post-event, maintenance, environment, equipment, techniques;

  • How to assess and screen clients for sports massage;

  • Carrying out subjective and objective client assessments;

  • Devising sports massage treatment plans;

  • Applying sports massage treatments;

  • Evaluate sports massage treatments.

Assessments:

  • Short answer theory assessment

  • Three observations covering client assessment, applying sports massage, evaluating treatments, pre-event, post-event, maintenance, clinical environment, non-clinical environment and different types of event.
